Morning glory blue
summer sky
shines through my window
- colour of hope
colour of memory.
He visited me in my undecorated flat
bare walls lovingly sanded
lumpy as adolescent skin
evening sky flooding in.
For once we were in harmony.
Drinking Cava from its cold bell
eating cheese and crackers
from the mini-market under the railway bridge.
He brought me a picture of two dancing cranes
and while he entertained the cat with smoke rings
I told him Aristophenes’ fable from the Symposium
of how lovers were once roly-poly
multi-sexed, completely spherical;
till they challenged the gods
- tried to bounce up a giant ramp to heaven -
got split in half as punishment
and left to seek their missing halves through the world.
The conversation foamed like Cava
looped like smoke rings
danced wing tip to wing tip
for once we might have been those lovers.
There were blue fields we might have roamed in
but I was forever driven to build fences
and he to run from fences not even thought of.
Now alone in a new flat
I meander over those fields
or wander the jet trails
across the blue magic sky
- colour of memory
but also of hope.
