Snow on Old Year's Night
The temperature dropped like a slate from a roof.
Distance between us stretched by weather, you phoned
to say you couldn’t come: some roads black
and glassy, others stopped by white drifts.
As the clock paces towards midnight, I open
the curtains, check the storm. Snowflakes blur
from the darkness, exposed for a second
in the wash of streetlights, pigments
that tantalise like possibility, but fall
to fix the street in a white shroud.
Beyond my shallow view, across the river
you scrabble in cupboards for unexpected food
while a roasting meal for two scents my kitchen.
I capture the reflection of falling snow
in a tumbler of twelve-year malt,
silently send you promises.
