No Marilyn Monroe Might Ever Have Walked On High Heels
At dawn downtown
we have just begun to look
at the sky
at our face in the mirror we
have just begun to speak
paint
hang laundry on a line set
a ticking clock on a bedroom dresser
vote
pull a history book off a library shelf and believe
what it says at dawn
downtown the alphabet
has just been reinvented the crank shaft
the drill bit the first man
is buried walks on the moon wonders
why
our world has to be the way it is at dawn
downtown no flag
might have ever been hung no bomb
ever dropped no Marilyn Monroe
might ever have walked on high heels in front
of a camera at dawn
downtown we still do not really understand what we are
doing
here as we teeter
between annihilation and a limitless
horizon at dawn
downtown a man
puts on the uniform of a streetcar conductor
or a priest
or a lion tamer and knows
that we have just begun to scratch
the surface.
