Fading
And I wonder
how long you will know me,
how long until I join
the bit part players,
characters who made
their first appearance
after you had lost the plot.
How long until
the fragile line between me
and everyone else dissolves,
until I might be son or
grandson, casual acquaintance,
best friend or the man
from the gas board.
I know how it ends;
I’ve read the books -
while you, thank God,
have not.
