You would think that a bassoon
who can sit out 365 bars
and come in not a hemidemisemiquaver
too soon would have learnt
that timing is the essence of enchantment,
and would know how close
to the edge he can come
without splitting the timber frame
and bringing the whole pergola
crashing round his ears.
