Azúcar
I have my own make-believe sugar factory.
Sometimes profits are up, sometimes down.
I rely on trial and error, quite a lot.
Sometimes I forget about my sugar factory
for weeks on end. Then I remember
and feel happy again just running it -
orders dispatched, the wages, the VAT,
(love those forms!),
yes, running it smoothly enough in my head.
Its not much to other people, perhaps,
but it means everything to me -
and it hurts no one, except me.

Penelope Shuttle lives in Cornwall with her husband Peter Redgrove. Her Selected Poems came out in 1998 and her seventh collection, A Leaf Out Of His Book, appeared in October 1999 (Oxford Poets/Carcanet, both PBS Recommendations).
