The Sting

It was a chair, she said, which had no value
other than Van Gogh once painted it.
Then she pointed to the open razor
kept in a glass case above the chair,
explaining how matching fingerprints
had been found on both
and we could have for one hundred Euros.
And this, she added opening a drawer
in which a rag lay crumpled,
has the same blood group found on the razor,
and she'd throw in free for our being tourists.
But it was the ceramic plate,
Spanish and early twentieth century,
which had caught our eye:
Five hundred Euros, no less, she said,
Picasso once spat on it.
Derrick Porter arrived late to mainstream poetry. His poems have appeared in several magazines and he has won prizes or been commended on several competitions.
