Day Breaks First
Day breaks first
behind the trees, there’s
rain falling on leaves, there are
birds belting out
their repertoire.
Maybe the poets aren’t
blameless.
They entrusted everything to
that one word they crammed
that soul stuff into it
until it ballooned out like an old
sack - the word silence.
I've seen it get light
become day after a sleepless
night’s alcohol
and behind the trees
first.
You can’t explain how fast
- the thing is it just happens,
day breaks, the same as wet clothes dry
on a naked body over
the increasing speed of a heartbeat.
