Predannack, The Lizard
...and you cannot say to me
that I see my world through rose-tinted eyes
for any oil-filled stream, any fume-filled sky
would be part of my tongue.
The truth is that here, on this
blackbird seagull’d day, I am looking
through sun-streams outside my door
at three horses who had a troubled life
but are now happy, my companion
being a dog who had a troubled life
but is now happy.
And the post box will soon be used
by snails seeking gum, the skies untroubled
by all except the practising helicopters
from the two field distant old airfield.
Somewhere cars and bars
will be covered in stars
but here the burst of periwinkle,
campion and columbine join song
with towering magenta of Whistling Jack
The coves of Poldhu, Polurrian, Mullion
and Kynance cut holes into my vision
and border my margins with heath,
shoreline, cliff, harbour and down.
Predannack is wild and remote and pure.
...the lizard moves slowly,
leaving very few prints on the centuries
and deterioration and change is when
one day all here may crumble, to be renumbered
and reassembled as statues in the landscape.
