He left with a smile and a new purpose
the small magazine gripped as firm
as his intention to attend the next meeting -
minutes earlier he had wandered in
eyes rifling the spines and jackets
sights swivelling the shelves
philosopher painter social sculptor
fitted for the writing craft
but the medium torpedoed by past priorities
continuing to scrutinise the shelves
he was unaware of the waiting issue
its pages soon to swallow his curious fingers
and as he scanned the early poems
the old want to be a writer
slowly resurfaced -
formed by The Cannon’s Mouth
gradually eating up his thoughts
surely a satisfying sale for the bookshop’s owners
