Magma Showcase: Jane Routh
Think of us as we were
Send an old photo, I’d like that
he writes. To remember us by
as we were before telephones, mortgages,
the weekday half-mile for the 8.30 bus
and I’ve found one, the two of us
at the top of some steps, turning –
someone must have shouted to us Hey:
we’re turning together, front feet
mid-step in a two-step
arms swinging out and laughing
bearded and long-haired
such beautiful people so sixties
dancing, as the camera has it
of that half-turn half-backward glance
over the shoulder at us,
the people they did not become.
Don’t look for a storyline;
don’t ask where they went,
I like them there on the top step
feet not quite touching the ground
step two and turn step step and glide
the afternoon sunlight unshadowed and kind.
