Premium Competition Report
(New Series: No. 5)
Out of a much larger field of entries than usual, I award the prize for the Competition which closed on February 15th, 1951, to Miss Rosamund Greenwood for her singularly haunting lyric, The Gift. Five pieces ran it close in poetic value; namely, Mr. Blundell’s succinct Recorded Music, Miss Erica May Brooks’ elegiac poem to her compatriot Edna St. Vincent Millay, Requiem in Sun and Rain, Miss Anne Brown’s graphic The Salvationist, Mr. Crompton’s chiselled Revelation and Mrs. Brail Mills’ mellifluous sonnet The Nightingale Replies. The general standard attained by the entrants was refreshingly high.
JOHN GAWSWORTH.

THE GIFT
I sent my love a little bird,
And sweetly, sweetly did it sing:
It gave him joy and only asked
His cherishing.
He took it from its wooden perch,
And opened wide its tiny beak,
And looked and looked with burning eyes:
It suffered, meek.
And then at last he understood
What made the cheerful roundelay.
He was content, but in his hand
A dead bird lay.
ROSAMUND GREENWOOD.
