Hating the vagueness of London’s streets
he called flocks of squares to order,
wig clutched against the changing winds,
nib as crook, rounding up the loose ponds.
Like wordsmiths and dictionary men,
he lost control: words stray their fences,
herds of houses escaped records.
Stubborn, despite the candle shortage
and sponsors turn-coating their investments,
he still patrolled, cutting linen,
until the plague of fire exploded.
Then reason galloped off: bareheaded
he stumbled through his ruins
howling over lost churches.
Sarah Williams lives on the Kent/East Sussex border. She has been writing poetry for two years and has been published in a number of magazines, such as Coffee House, Orbis and The New Writer.
