Funeral
Birthdays, you’d send a card,
My three-million times removed aunt.
Things I didn’t like on the front -
Steam trains, footballers, cars...
It’s because you didn’t know me.
We met at weddings. Twice. Briefly.
If you had known me well,
I doubt that we’d have got on
Me the atheist while you’re one
Whose coffin’s in the aisle
Of the church you went to each day,
Where they sing hymns with their arms raised.
Not grief but guilt I’m feeling -
I never sent a thank you note.
Thought you’d stop. Take the huff. Spoilt brat!
But they kept on coming.
