Water Polo For Beginners
Isn’t it fun while the attendant is on duty;
but he has to lock up and go home
and after that it’s us or them
plus whatever is at the deep end biding its time.
Though neither the skinny kid who got slung
like a sack of turnips
into the reflection of the full moon;
nor the girl who jumped in to escape
protested; by the Autumn
a contractor’s wagon had tipped in
the rubble of a betting shop. Now
people in flip-flops
wander through the new playground
to reach the icecream van; and puddles
are formed by the names scrawled
in concrete under the climbing frame.
