In a wonderfully translated volume from the original French by Robert Majzels and Erin Mouré, Nicole Brossard’s poetry shimmers and shines with the sparseness and purity of language that is at the same time exact, lyrical and haunting. She is the master of the long poem form and consciously uses a lot of white space on every page, something her poems need and demand. Here is the opening stanza of the book: “I know this by the words I am missing / my life has gone to sleep / in the contour so precise / of the tip of a long bone / though I still know how to smile / before Roman cloisters and their ossuaries / the value of I love you.” Nicole Brossard is a major Canadian voice in contemporary world poetry along with the likes of Anne Carson and Michael Ondaatjee.
