Ultima Thule
Snow grains keep drifting under eyelids.
The gale hits heavily, an axe.
Hibernating, my mind curls up
at nightfall, everything suspended.
Only the glacier crowfoot of blown
glass dazzles this arctic starkness.
Hammer iron into solid clouds.
Occasionally a solitary raven
crosses the void. Women’s voices
are wailing in wind, men’s
muttering in brooks. A mineral ice block
displays its burning green heart.
No honeysuckle garlands this July,
no apples will burnish the cheeks of September.
Boulders lie split with knives. Falling
snow whispers, close to the bone.
