The study of genealogy
(for Ellen)
Royal blood flows in her,
a thin streak, much diluted
fine as a twist of blue thread
woven on the wrong side
of the blanket.
It trickled out by chance
at the library where it courses,
unobtrusively genteel,
through transportation registers,
poll books, parish records,
a convoluted channel
decades away from the
careless coupling
that set the stream in motion.
Now she stands a little straighter
on walkabouts, sits alongside
in bullet-proof limousines,
waves in tandem, in spirit,
in her dreams,
gets piqued
when they breed
and lengthen the distance
between her and inheritance.
