D Day, Normandie 2004
I see the hare,
maggots make its shape,
the head, the eyes, empty,
the body leaping, still.
Bells have been ringing all week,
neighbours remembered in prayer,
occupied, lost in the taking
of necessary bridges.
I smell the hare
under the hedge,
on a long walk up the lane,
rotting in the green day.
The way of liberty is written
high on countless road signs
that lead in from the sea. Did you know
this land holds the blood-lines of memory?
The feet of the hare are young feet,
bone clean in the sun.
