Unseasonable Song
The sun gives unexpected gifts today
beguiling birds to unwrap summer songs
and carol thoughts of icicles away.
Do they not realise it is Christmas time?
Have seasons’ calculations gone so wrong?
Trees dip their finest nibs in Indian ink
to sketch bare branches on December sky,
but listening to these choristers you’d think
they had forgotten last week’s fog and rime
and set their instinct’s thermostat awry.
Though bonfire feathers presage colder flights,
thrushes hang Jubilates from each perch
and thread green alleluias through the light
– less like a scene for Winter’s pantomime
than Easter decorations round a church.
