Cleaning out your Dad’s desk, you found
a card-bound album, opened it
halfway: oval clouds, a rose-topped
bonnet and her corsetted, ripe
lines were framed by sandy edges.
You’d forgotten this proud, yellowed
beauty that had stood out on your
Grandad’s parlour sideboard. She had
been taken by him and kept by
your Dad. You can explain no more.
Now, as we look, her face is a
lover’s, a mother’s or a wife’s,
part of others, maybe part of
us, maybe a passing touch, and
nothing to my unconceived son.
