Palmist Childhood
North seas churn difficult waters,
Breech-birthing coins -, a silver piece
Washes in tail first, with one blue skin
Helium dolphin, summer conceived.
Gales hurl us into the amusements,
Throws rolled at the Greyhound Racer,
Mother creaks open fingers for heartlines,
- tells us she guesses fortunes, while practising
extra sensory perceptions - she could
make silks from one sow’s ear -,
- living room curtains into the bargain,
and banana flan from its essence alone,
in a cauldron of bubbles, we wash drapes,
- on the trailer park dirt track
in the sunlight soaping air,
- launder transvisions.
Lorna Liffen is an ex-East Anglian and daughter of a chemist and clairvoyant. She has had four collections of poems out by Hub Editions and is currently working on a play.
