Whales
Not far off-shore, the shining sea was smooth
when first we looked, and there was not a breath
of wind; but – suddenly! – we saw a patch
of water stir, rippling, until that stretch
churned into foam as though a big vessel
was making its way south, down the channel:
yet no ship was in sight. Then, there they were –
huge, curved dark shapes breaking the surface, more
than half-a-dozen of them, moving fast
away from us. We wondered at their haste.
Arthur McHugh has has poems and translations published in various magazines and has won poetry competitions in Birmingham and elsewhere.
