Warren Cliff
Walking on the Cornish Coastal Path last year
I found the cliff top marked
with stakes and danger signs,
warning Unsafe Cliff.
Hoping to catch sight of seal,
I wanted to look closer at
the inlet far below, but
riddled with rabbit holes and
cracks it was obviously dangerous.
I went a few steps past the stakes
and still saw not enough.
I’ve just been there again
and saw that I should have been
more careful. Part of the cliff
had plummeted to the sea two
hundred feet below
and near half an acre was
still precariously perched
some twenty feet below me.
What a fearsome thought,
to have the ground drop away
beneath your feet and know that
any second you could plunge and die
so far below.
This time I stayed well clear.
