In doubt of life’s worth he watches the small
being busy at what they do – wasps building
cities of paper, swallows flying low over
stubble, rooks marking out an autumn sky –
is amazed anew at their complexity of purpose. . .

to simply be, he holds the quietude of drizzle
folding itself up a combe; smiles at a plough’s
lace sail of gulls, at half a rainbow plugged
into a hill. Or, reversing cause and effect,
he lets himself see stone erode rain,
a pond’s reflection attract sun’s disc. . .

. . .beholding this microbe miracle of interdependent
life, and how it all, every tiny movement, adds up,
throughout space and time, into a part of him
and him a part of it – the mutable constancy of
mountains, constrained freedom of birds, latency
of fungus, eye’s breadth of oceans, numinosity of
night’s firmament, reassurances of self’s in/significance.
