What's the Point of Reading Poetry?
It won’t change the tyre on your Rover,
ease the jam on the A453.
Poetry is strictly for the sexually strange.
It’s not for you and me.
Shakespeare never tiled a leaking roof
or glossed a door in cornflower blue.
You ever seen a poetry type
fit a kitchen, build a barbecue?
Take Worthington with his daffodils:
could he grow a cabbage, point a wall?
What’s the point of reading poetry?
There’s plumbing to be done
since the cistern’s drowned its ball.
