Deadheads
Rene 1934 - 1999
Early, sun-swathed, one poppy
in the barley ripening in a large white field;
it was you, the horizons, the radiance;
I waved as I pedalled past - eyes misty,
remember the marsh mist? -
coasting now to Burnham Market.
Chunks of island have been gobbled by the tides,
I thought you’d want to know. Mallows
on the sea wall. Look, you once said, seeing
them with your painter’s eye against gull green
and dun. Skylarks, up up
go come.
At the funeral you’d have been chuffed,
just row on row, almost a horticultural show.
Back in Norfolk, you slip between
deck chairs arranged for talk,
roses you dead-headed
sand poppies in the walk.
