Disillusionment
The lights outline her features,
Moving through her short dyed hair
To descend upon happier faces.
She sits perfectly still,
Her eyes contemplating nothing,
Her expression directed at no-one.
She sighs,
And her gaze moves listlessly around the packed and sweaty
basement.
Her friends are here,
But she doesn’t feel like finding them.
She doesn’t feel like anything much.
She knows what she wants,
But it never works.
The right ones are never interested.
She always says the wrong things
And ends up sounding stupid,
Her laugh, annoyingly shrill,
Breaking into any silence in the conversation.
So she has given up again,
Abandoned her search for something more
Than a brief and unsatisfying coupling,
Crude and meaningless.
She almost smiles,
But her mouth doesn’t want to.
So she picks up her coat,
And goes home,
Disappointed.
