             to the irrational control of money. Chief
             prophets Marks, Canes, etc. (obvious
             pejorative terms later adopted with pride,

             period of the Trans-Atlantic variant of the
             English tongue (color, automobile,

             note to p. 23).

p. 50     "Alice Fume"; pseudonym for Ed Moore, noted
             bandleader and female impersonator.

p. 54     "K. Tynan"; presumably a pen-name ("Tin-Man"?); 
             reference now lost.

p. 55     "J. Kott"; pseudonym of Janice Crib, a light-
             hearted parodist who deceived many "serious"
             critics of the time. (cf. Macphearson, Myra
             Buttle, G. McCluean).

p. 57     "D.E. Laurens": Arab homosexual who upon
             immigration took up coalmining. Wrote many
             selfpitying novels of the "realist" school,
             "Women in Ross", "The Whinebow", etc.

p. 60     "advertising"; used specifically 1850-
             2050 to denote the business of commercial
             propaganda; in the inchoate society of that
             time many were forced into this degrading
             task. If contemporary accounts are to be
             believed, programmes on the videoscreen 
             were legally interrupted by its hired 
             preachers.

p. 61     "Lucy Smith"; poetaster of the "prosaic"
             school (cf. Lurking, Aims). Not to be
             confused with the School of Violence whose
             members by their noms de plume (Gun, Hews,
             etc.) signified their adherence.

p. 66     "W. Magonegall, A. Gest"; no reference to
             the above is known.

p. 69     "Japan"; original name of Mitsubishi Island.
             Once, if early documents are to be 
             credited, an attractive place to live in with
             countryside, inhabitants, etc. Its present
             existence as an automated factory dates
             from the early 21st century.

p. 74     "Al Lott & Al Vares"; cross-talk comedy act
             in the last days of vaudeville.

p. 77     "I ham Milton"; laboured parody by an 
             anonymous journalist fl. circa 1975. See
             "Die sogenannten Komischen", Heinrich

p. 80     "Nixon"; name of figurehead purporting to
             run some of the ex-colonies: "nix-son",
             "issue of nothing".
