Suroopa Mukherjee. Across the Mystic Shore.
Macmillan New Writing, Price £9.99, Pages 312,
ISBN 0-230-00732-5.
In this novel, set in the cities of New Delhi and Benaras, four women enact their lives — they confront their present dilemmas and delusions which are a direct consequence of their own past, about the decision they had taken back then. This is another Bengalieque novel, with its milieu beautifully portrayed and highlighted in a nuanced fashion. Mukherjee’s writing is clean and well thought through without any fussy areas of overwrought syntax and prolixity. It is an enjoyable and satisfying read — the novel being somewhat traditional and nostalgic and full of daily drama. Across the Mytic Shore is a quietly confident debut by Suroopa Mukherjee.
