Although he saw their love as happenstance
thought kept on interfering. His calls from work
tormented her with nothings, his pillow talk
burned like the dawn acting at a distance:
Are you awake?…What are you thinking? Her moods
decayed so strangely he had to keep his wits
or live with disappearances, wild nights
dragging the old canal with likelihoods.
His one comfort: they lived as certainly
as Heisenberg had meant. Sinking his key
each evening in the same, probable latch,
unlocking the box where something prowled in search,
his love was undetermined - either outside
or in, assuming her alive and dead.
