Lizard Reality - Ronnie Goodyer
Bluechrome Publishing, PO Box 109, Portishead, Bristol BS20 7ZJ
150 pages £7.99
Ronnie Goodyer has followed on from his fi rst Bluechrome collection, Indigo Dreams, with these harder-edged poems written, we are told, after disappointing changes in life. There’s still some of the sentimentality of his earlier work and there’s still the admiration of the natural world around him at the Lizard but now there are also poems about parting, being single again, being alone in a family house and friends dying. He tries not to take himself too seriously or wallow in self-pity (there are poems entitled Portrait of the Poet as a Sad Git and the touching, funny/sad and the touching, funny/sad Trying to be a Lonesome Poet, with Dog, which was published in iota) but I sense the struggle that entails. The title poem is one of the best in the book. It starts with a description of airfield war buildings and a cart-horse now free as the people/ co-habiting with truths and backdrops.// Closet lives with the doors open or closed; the/ community of unity or confinement. There’s a secret in the doorway if you care to look.
