Knightsbridge Morning
Do let me sit and watch your morning ripen,
You matrons, poodle-drawn to fish and fashion shops;
Go to the City, mohaired gentlemen,
Glide over smooth streets, gently, gently,
Bentley-borne, serene.
The wire-haired Chinese roars his yellow car
Perilous down the pristine bridge of knights;
Registered millionaires arise at noon
From yet unopened thighs of knee-locked ladies,
Balenciaga hobbled.
My friend and I will stay awhile
And while away a day, my friend and I,
Seeing prams pushed, dogs pulled, and barely self-propelled,
The elderly genteel on pilgrimage
To Harrods’ healthjuice bar.
For we like the Kensington calm, the Knightsbridge way,
From our window seat with coffee and cigarettes;
We are rather taken by the menus in Anglo-French,
By the one-dress windows,
And the expense.
Eventually we too will go to the City,
Rattling along to Bank or the Blackfriars bridge,
Chattering away with the bright-scarved secretaries,
To a place where we and a hundred like us will meet
Geoffrey for lunch.
