The Innocent
God does not wait for the innocent.
He takes them as they stand
In the movement of life around them
And moves them forward while others
Slip and slither back.
They are the ones whose aircraft has taken off
From a dissolving runway
But the fuel multiplies with height
And whatever the distance from take-off.
They are innocent in their trust of him
Knowing the peace of Isaiah twenty-six three
The peace of trust which cannot be analysed
Mimicked or understood except through experience,
The experience, as it were, of leaning on the wind
In conditions of risk
And knowing it will not fail;
Or relying on more than a sense of direction
In thick fog over moorland bogs
Knowing the firmness of the next step
Before the last is left;
Knowing the enveloping peace of complete security
Through the assurance of secured love.
