Introduction to The Edge of the Map
Sarnath - close to Varanasi, formerly Benares - is the site of the deer park in which Prince Siddhãrtha Gautama, the historic Buddha, preached his first sermon; today the site of a museum of ancient sculptures in chunar, an expressive grey stone.
Ch'ang-an was the capital of China during the T'ang dynasty. The trip into exile, as the result of a fall from favour in the eyes of the Emperor, was a frequent hazard for the Chinese bureaucrat. For some, the journey into obscurity would have taken them through the striking three gorges of the Yang'tse River. One such exile was Tu Fu, who with his contemporary Li Po, may be described as China's 'Shakespeare'.
The association of water and time derives from the Chinese water clock, referred to often in traditional Chinese verse.
