Discovery
i.m. Brian Merrikin Hill
I always expected to find it
somewhere in the wood: the dead alien,
shiny and strange,
a colour like green
or maybe gold, missed by those
walking their dogs.
All that long school summer holiday,
far in heat and dreaming,
I went to look for it,
walking the footpath
behind the big mock Tudor houses
with fountains, tennis courts, wide gardens;
catching a glimpse through a hedge
most days of a girl’s white flesh
sparkling in the brightness
of a swimming pool.
Each time I went to the wood,
split between finding the alien
and seeing the half-naked girl
through a gap in a hedge,
I knew my motive was becoming
more and more less sure.
