Wolf Wind
I know where blood, hand, cry, bone, pleasure, grief, stone
flare and fade like the ghost particles that fill empty space
with their hunger to be,
teasing as if memory’s dream in a memory held in dream.
When I think
This is the best my life can be
the wind blowing from there whispers
Every joy is shadow and soon done;
not even loss stays to anchor you in the real.
Contempt of flesh or exile from all that makes life precious
give no shield:
this wind feeds on the common fear that makes all men one.
Deep in the woods it fans the fire that torches the tallest tree
and chars all life -
yet new lives open from seeds
when downpours spill from mouths
only fire makes smile -
the fuse that burns up the root
knows this wind as the bright mother from whom it comes.
I might call it love, but that seems too hard or too wide
or too far from our own that wants to hold and hold
and teach time to let go.
Let it stay nameless, then, not even God:
despair and solace, it is the terrible beauty that blows through
everything.
