Different Kinds of Beast
In a clearing I came upon her,
The dog I’d lost for an hour or so;
Not a clearing I knew existed,
And unlike any I had seen before,
A place apart and so strangely lit,
So peculiar with noon’s hot dappling,
I took a step backwards and looked again,
Seeing a black dog against green ferns,
A stranger to me as I watched her,
And I to her, it was clear.
