HUSEIN TAHMISCIC was born in 1931 in Sarajevo, the son of a Muslim official. At 13, he joined actively in the liberation struggle against the German occupiers, was wounded in action, and his eyesight has, in consequence, been deteriorating ever since, his latest operation to halt the process being performed in Rumania last year. He went back to school after the war, and then to university to study philosophy. He has published six volumes of poetry, a few volumes of prose and literary essays and some theoretical studies on the subject of children’s literature, as well as radio and television plays.
NIKO GRAFENAUER is one of the outstanding young Slovene poets. He has published two books of poetry: Vecer pred praznikom (On the Eve of a Holiday) in 1962 and Stiska jezika (Language Under Pressure) in 1965. He studied World Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Ljubljana, where he received the Presern Award for his thesis on Rilke. He lives in Ljubljana as a freelance writer and editor-in-chief of Problemi, one of Yugoslavia’s leading cultural and literary reviews. Same of his critical work is being translated into French and Italian; a selection of his latest poetry, entitled Condition, translated by Joze Lazar, is awaiting publication in English.
