He is baking brown bread
In the formica red kitchen.
The radio plays Neil Diamond
And then Neil Sedaka. Some
Light jazz. Sondheim. Night
Music for the mid-morning.
The careful wash of a brush
On a snare drum. A voice
Describes the Bank Holiday
Traffic. It is very wet between
Derbyshire and South Wales.
The roads that swirl dangerously
About Birmingham could easily
Be mistaken for intestines. Warm
Intestines.
He greases two equal tins.
The kneaded dough reminds
Him of the hard elastic muscle
That flattened her stomach.
He takes a carving knife
From the kitchen drawer
And slices through it. Two
Perfectly equal loaves. Yes.
Identical. Almost.
Now prove it.
