Frances Angela
Marriage
My father left
early for work
his flask packed inside
the frayed tartan shopping bag.
She knelt in backless slippers,
a thin woollen cardigan
roughly pulled on, raking cinders
in the cold fireplace.
The house was quiet
no parting between them
just his glance
at her stooping back
and the soft click of the front door.
She sat up, buttocks resting
on her yellowed heels
pushing back her hair
lips pressed white
ripping newspaper
crushing it
into tight balls.
