Commentary (text)
Our brothers and sisters at the late departed-Camden Bugle and their undaunted C.M.H.C. (Camden Mental Health Consortium) are welcome to merge their talents with Homeless Diamonds. We are also proud to publicize another news and info magazine helping street people, The Pavement, which lists hundreds of Pavement stockists and their times of opening. The Pavement stockists hand out sleeping bags, blankets, food, insecticidal sprays, clothing and postage stamps.
The Big Issue, although disadvantaged by its needlessly guilt-prone founder John Bird (a proletarian saint despite feeling he has succombed to total commercialization of rebellion, protest and dissent) is still very useful as a literary, photographic and newsflash organ. At £1.50 it is a bargain which keeps several “vendors” alive.
As with every new product (Homeless Diamonds is less than four years old) we are tempted by entrepreneurs and politicos but we are fiercely proud of our amateur and gratis status. Our contributors, who retain copyright but who make Homeless Diamonds zilch, are glad of the publishing space.
Homeless Diamonds is easily accessible to web browsers as it is now on-line so it will be read by the Kremlin, Pentagon and Vatican.
We must stress that there is no revolution happening in the tent cities and dismal mean streets where thousands live. Some of the most depressed and haggard people in the world are nomadic outsiders who live out rough. Survivalism not socialism is their agenda. I hope that they can develop cheerful bonhomie but it will be difficult for them to love the universe. Hatred, fury and marauding are rare among them . . . they are innocent of usury, gambling, prostitution, bribery and avarice and won’t for years be tempted by mammon.
