No, not sonnets... by Dennis Leckey,

This collection reads like it has been written by an avid reader of poetry attempting to write himself into becoming a poet, a route I suspect a number of us take. The evidence for this is that a great many of these poems own up to their poetic source of inspiration, and are often sprigged with irritatingly italicised quotations from those poets’ poems. But Dennis Leckey has already found his own, original voice. The five poems from the ‘No, not sonnets...’ sequence are superior - and are superior poems - to everything else contained here - ‘Penguins are so funny. Their flipper’d gait / and flipper’d arms are like boys playing at planes. / Arms their wings. Fluffy chicks as big as mums...’ NO. 22. If there really are 32 of them, they deserve a separate publication all of their own.
