On Blackfriars Bridge
Is it too late to ask an artist now
to turn this London afternoon - clouds full
and light as happiness and mutable
as their reflections in the rippled flow
beneath this bridge? - haphazard junction of
profoundly slow-revolving ferris wheel
with old St. Paul’s still dome? - the sudden chill
on my bare arm of rain? - Is it too much
to ask an artist now to transform this
round, slow-revolving hemisphere of sky,
this arc of bridge, the clockwork of that Eye
into perpetual apocalypse;
a casual crossing to the Underground -
under this bridge, the rushing current, drowned?
Native to New York, Leah Fritz was known in the US for her essays in the ‘underground press’, and two books which culminated from them. Her first three poetry collections have been published in the UK by Loxwood Stoneleigh since her move to London in 1985. The most recent is The Way to Go (1999).
