Loraine Blishen
Fall
Trees rocket like paintbrushes on canvas.
Dressed in tweeds, zipped up against sky,
some are split and spent.
Ivy clings for dear life, bushes are poppied up,
birds with flying colours form fugues
and remember cat and mouse.
Broken tracks of branches slash the path
and in the hedgerow an old man snores, death defying.
Fool's hats of leaves doff themselves.
A glorious minute of silence
for a dome of green, long since departed.
Bits of fences hyphenate fields of lines,
horse-drawn-out by working farmers, diversifying.
In the ditches are twigs, ashen in wild fire,
while there is an explosion of berries, spread like a parade.
A showdown before snowdown.
When titanium white flags are flown
field days are over. All will be under siege, not waving . . .
