Language, Translation and Interpretation
Busy, busy, busy. That’s how it is now, it’s busy. The work keeps coming in for this section and there’s still room for more. Contributers introduce the magazine to friends who then become contributers themselves and so it goes on.
This issue has attracted writers new to us. Francis Thomson writing his fine Scots Gaelic lines sits well with Tim Saunders elegant teyrlinenn musings on Slate working in Kernewek. Tim got a commendation for his submission to the Great Trees of Cornwall Poetry Competition which Les and I were privileged to judge recently. We had not asked for entries in Kernewek and so were pleasantly surprised to receive several of very high quality.
There’s also another of Betsy Content Bogert’s delightful pieces in French, and a moving piece in Gurbet by Ilya Jovanovic. Gurbet is a Romany language whose grammar is much influenced by the structure of the Romanian language. IIya grew up in Yugoslavia but now lives in Vienna where he runs a centre for Roma people. This poem was chosen for it’s strength of feeling as well as the physical resonance of it’s words. Ilya is recognised as an accomplished poet and hopes to publish an anthology in the United Kingdom before too long. We look forward to hearing from him again.
I hope you all enjoy these pieces of work as much as I enjoy reading them an presenting them to you.
