Corner Shadows
First-class lighting lights
your okay city's fine lines
as the sun completes its declination –
but the same bright lighting
casts the deepest shadows
around concealed corners
where less-appealing sights can hide.
Caution walks beside you
past these dark places,
uncertainty colours your mind's eye.
Sometimes a hungry breeze comes sniffing
at your upright citizen's inclinations
and your optimism - subjugated
by uncontrollable sensitivities
is diminished –
there are arenas
of your psyche you dare not enter
in case the price you pay is too high.
Your city has been dulled by its reputation –
absences shape the air –
idlers on daytime corners might be
the next night's disappeared.
If you see them on the morrow
you might wonder how much longer
they, or you, can survive.
