Positive test for lipids
To test, most simply, for fats, for oils,
press the tissue. Look for a translucent spot
on clean, white paper. Someone
was sure to have the thought
of oil-paper panes in log cabin windows.
The cheer of oil lamp glow
welcoming the hunter home. That place
along the straight-away is a grease spot now.
Yesterday the vultures tried,
between on-rushing cars, to clean the bones
of the dead opossum. The test seems positive.
Pressed by a thousand passing cars.
Molecules expressed and driven
unblessed, unmourned into the pavement.
The test is positive. The spot translucent.
In the early angle of the sun
it seems as if the earth beneath
was visible - waiting - amorphous, brown, bare.
