End of the holidays
I was the one who would lift up a stone
sunk in grass between the mallow
to discover a world with little white roots
of a pea-green-coloured city;
but the last of the young girls gone
who even yesterday were still on bicycles
hidden by the large September leaves
at the level-crossing’s barrier
me I feel myself to be that stone.
Even the clouds are low over the tennis courts
and the hotel name written on the wall
in large black letters is entirely drenched with rain.
