Fat Girl
You’ve always been the fat girl on the edge
of fashionable, anorexic throngs,
your well-known, secret forays to the fridge
at midnight. What’s a few chins between friends?
Amazed by jutting hipbones, bellies taut
as drum skins, breasts like Cox’s pippins, peeled
and halved, to stipple a flimsy, clinging shirt.
Yours swell the seams with mammaries, unfold,
untrammelled by the keepnet of your bra.
You hover, offering sycophantic smiles,
a skilled purveyor of compliments which they
exact as payment for inclusion. Any tolls
are worth it, though, to keep the status quo,
you, as fat girl, the anti-heroine,
full moon eclipsed by glittering starlets who
need you to flesh the fears which keep them thin.
